What Does it Take to Become a Hydraulic Engineer?

Studying to become an engineer can open many different doors in life. You can choose to specialise in various things including, civil engineering, aerospace engineering or even environmental engineering. One type of engineering is hydraulics. Hydraulic engineering as a sub-discipline of civil engineering is concerned with the flow and conveyance of fluids, principally water and sewage. Hydraulics are complex systems and it can take years to master the complexities of the systems.

However, it is a very rewarding field. So what does it take to become a hydraulic engineer?

What does a hydraulic engineer do?

Hydraulic engineers can do many things including designing new hydraulic systems, diagnosing and repairing hydraulic systems and researching new methods of controlling and allocating hydraulic resources. Typically, hydraulic engineers have a background in civil engineering as this allows them to have an understanding of how hydraulic structures work.

Skills required to become a hydraulic engineer

Maths skills: Engineering requires advanced mathematics in order to measure, estimate production needs and comply with the laws of physics. A good understanding of mathematics is important in order to be able to design sturdy, sustainable structures.

Teamwork skills: It’s vital that you can work well with others in order to effectively collaborate on projects. You need to communicate effectively, listen to directions and requirements and keep an approachable mindset for new ideas.

Design skills: A key part of being a hydraulics engineer is designing structures or being able to understand designs. You’ll need a thorough understanding of the design process as well as how to help others understand the complexities of engineering principles.

Software skills: Ideally, you’ll have an apt understanding of software skills and design programs such as AutoCAD. This will allow you to easily draft, edit and collaborate on designs.
